Aguawan Beach Coastal Reclamation Pollution Control Using Silt Curtains, Philippines

Project Overview

The project was carried out at Aguawan Beach, where coastal land reclamation was implemented by widening the shoreline using slag materials. During reclamation and filling works, large amounts of fine particles and suspended sediments were generated, causing turbidity plumes and posing risks to nearby marine water quality and coastal ecology.

To control the diffusion of polluted suspended solids and sediments, a marine silt curtain system was installed to isolate the construction zone. The system allowed water exchange while effectively blocking suspended particles, preventing sediment plumes from spreading to surrounding waters.

Technical Scheme

The project adopted an integral permeable marine silt curtain system specifically designed for coastal reclamation with slag filling operations.
Key technical measures included:

  • Construction Zone Containment
Silt curtains were arranged around the reclamation area to form a closed perimeter, preventing suspended slag particles and sediments from dispersing into surrounding waters.
  • Selective Filtration Performance
The curtain fabric allows water to pass through while effectively blocking fine particles and suspended sediments, achieving a “water-permeable, solids-blocking” effect.
  • Full-Depth Isolation Design
Curtains extended from the surface down to near the seabed, providing vertical containment of turbidity plumes at different depths.
  • Stable Anchoring and Floatation System
Heavy-duty floats, ballast chains, and anchors ensured stability under wave action, tidal currents, and construction vessel disturbance.
  • Environmental Monitoring and Control
Continuous turbidity monitoring inside and outside the curtain verified effective control of suspended solids diffusion.

HOKBG Supply Scope

Project Achievement

  • Successfully contained suspended slag particles and sediments within the reclamation zone
  • Prevented turbidity plumes from spreading to adjacent marine waters and coastal areas
  • Maintained natural water exchange while effectively blocking polluted suspended solids
  • Reduced environmental impact on nearby marine ecosystems and shoreline environment
  • Demonstrated the effectiveness of HOKBG® silt curtains in achieving reliable pollution control during coastal reclamation projects
