Case Study of Coral Reef Protection in the Yangpu International Container Hub Expansion Project

Project Overview

The Yangpu International Container Hub Expansion Project (hereinafter referred to as "Yangpu Port Expansion Project") is located in the northwestern part of Hainan Island, in the heart of the Beibu Gulf region, adjacent to major international shipping routes. The master plan maintains the "one port, three areas" layout, encompassing the Yangpu Port area, Shentou Port area, and Houshuiwan Port area. The port will eventually have 44 kilometers of coastline, 24 million square meters of land area, and approximately 146 berths, with an annual throughput capacity expected to reach 225 million tons and 12 million TEUs by 2035. The first phase of the Yangpu Port expansion project involves dredging the harbor basin and filling the storage yard.

Project Timeline

Project Planning: 2020–2021
Expansion Construction: 2021–2024 (ongoing)
Coral Reef Protection Implementation: Parallel to marine reclamation and construction phases
Projected Completion: 2025

Technical Scheme

During the expansion construction process, construction activities may affect the coral reef ecosystem in the nearby waters due to increased turbidity, suspended matter, and drainage. To this end, the project uses an integral water-permeable anti-fouling curtain to proactively protect the coral reef area.
The technical measures included:

  • Anti-pollution curtains are deployed in coral reef growth areas to intercept sewage generated by land reclamation
  • Installing silt curtains at reclamation discharge outlets to capture slurry and sediments
  • Monitoring seawater temperature, salinity, and turbidity to ensure all conditions met coral reef growth requirements

HOKBG Supply Scope

HOKBG provided a customized anti-fouling curtain system for the project, which can withstand high salinity and wave environments and ensure long-term use.
The scope of supply includes:

  • Integral aging-resistant, water-permeable and anti-fouling curtain with float, curtain and anchoring system
  • Coral Reef Protection Solutions and Installation Instructions Using Anti-fouling Curtains

Project Achievement

The coral reef protection measures successfully ensured that the temperature, salinity, and turbidity of surrounding waters remained within safe limits for coral growth. As a result, vibrant coral ecosystems continue to flourish near the port construction zone.
The project demonstrates a “green win-win” model, balancing large-scale port development with ecological preservation, and has been recognized as a benchmark for environmentally friendly marine engineering in Hainan.
